Answer:

Dr. Helen Y. Chu, a physician researcher at the University of Washington School of Medicine, had been collecting nasal swabs from research participants in the Seattle Flu Study with the goal of being able to better detect and control the spread of flu. Much like with coronavirus, the people who test positive for flu is not an accurate reflection of all the people who actually have the flu. By testing everyone, researchers can get a better sense of the spread of the disease.

The research participants in the Seattle Flu Study agreed that their sample would be tested for “the flu and other respiratory pathogens (germs)” and were notified that state law requires the researchers to report certain infectious conditions. In January, when these flu researchers became aware of the first confirmed coronavirus case in Washington state, they realized that they could test the nasal swabs they had already collected. By doing this, they could get a better sense of how far the virus had already spread.

Potential complications in research

Then they hit a roadblock. Several rules might actually prohibit this additional testing: those requiring informed consent from participants and those requiring that laboratories that return results to people have special approval.
