Anne is an orphan who gets adopted by Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert.  They are brother and sister, unmarried and wanted to adopt a boy.  This mistake happens yet, they keep Anne.

Anne is a bright child and active too.  Anne’s sunny nature and quirky imagination wins everyone’s heart in the community.  She does some prank or the other which becomes a tragic comedy for her.

She accidentally dyes her hair with green colour and bakes a cake for Mrs. Allan, the reverend’s wife with liniment (medicine) instead of vanilla.  Luckily, Mrs. Allan finds the whole episode funny and invites her for tea.

The author of the book states that Anne is the extension of modern woman who is individualistic, resourceful and great humanitarian at heart.

Anne, after the death of Mathew, decides to take care of Marilla by taking up teaching position in Avonlea.  This shows her kindness.

Anne tried very hard to please Marilla with her social skills. But it was very difficult. She was very excited to bake a cake for the new priest and his wife but she landed up in an embarrassing situation.

Marilla invited Mr. and Mrs. Allan to tea. She spent several days in preparing things for the young couple. She allowed Anne to bake a layer cake. Anne had baked many cakes earlier but she was very nervous while making this one.

The cake looked beautiful when it was taken out from the oven. Anne brought it proudly and served it to Mrs. Allan who was her new hero. Mrs. Allan could hardly swallow the cake but she ate it because she did not want to hurt her feelings.

Marilla tasted the cake and asked Anne about the ingredients she had used. She came to know that by mistake Anne had used anodyne liniment instead of vanilla which made the cake taste awful.

Anne was very upset. She ran upstairs, threw herself on the bed and started weeping. Mrs. Allan cheered her up. She told Anne that she should not feel so bad because she made mistakes only once and did not repeat the same mistakes. Anne felt relieved and thought that after she had made all the possible mistakes she will not make mistakes anymore.
