The post-harvest damage caused to the foodgrains during storage is mainly due to infestation by pests, which causes a huge loss in the production of food grains.
Neem leaves are widely used to repel the insect pests from food grains. It is a cheap and effective method of protecting food grains from insect damage. It is mostly used by south Indian farmers for the storage of Ragi grain.
Turmeric (haldi) is another good alternative which can be used in its raw form. Its strong smell and insecticidal properties keep the insects away from food grains. This treatment gives the grains long-lasting preservation from pest attacks and is safe for consumption.

Due to its insect repellent properties Neem is used to store grains in houses.Sometimes neem extracts are also used against pests & insects. These extracts don't usually kill insects & pests immediately. They change the feeding or lifecycle of insect until it is no longer able to live or have young.
