In this process, silver is oxidised. During this process, silver undergoes tarnishing as it reacts with sulfur( in various compounds) present in the air to form silver sulphide, which is black in colour.

  • The reaction for the above mentioned process is given below:

4Ag + 2H2S + O2 ----> 2Ag2S +2H2O

  • Tarnished silver products can be rectified by polishing. However, it can damage the layer of silver and thereby should be prevented.

[ The use of the term 'oxidation' may be a misnomer as tarnishing involves addition of sulfur and not oxygen. However, 'tarnished' is the most appropriate term for this.]
