In this process, silver is oxidized. Silver, when exposed to the air forms a black layer on the surface as it undergoes tarnishing. It reacts with sulfur( in the form of various compounds) present in the air to form silver sulphide, which is black in colour.

  • The reaction for the above mentioned process is given below:

4Ag + 2H2S + O2 ----> 2Ag2S +2H2O

  • Tarnished silver products can be rectified by polishing. However, it can damage the layer of silver and thereby should be prevented.

[ The use of the term 'oxidation' may be a misnomer as tarnishing involves addition of sulfur and not oxygen. However, 'tarnished' is the most appropriate term for this.]
