→ Direct speech also known as quoted speech means the actual or exact words that are spoken by a person.

→ The direct speech is always enclosed with inverted commas (" ")

→ There is no change in words.

→ For eg; They said," Please come with us."

2. Indirect speech:-

→ Indirect speech means reporting what the first person has said or asked.

→ we change a sentence in indirect speech without using first person's actual words.

→ This is also known as reported speech.

→ We change it into the past tense.

For eg; They requested to come with them.

✵ Rules for changing Direct to Indirect Speech ✵

✪ Inverted Commas ( " " ) are used in Direct Speech.

✪ Inverted Commas ( " " ) are not used in Indirect Speech.

✪ In Direct Speech , the actual words of the speaker in Inverted commas are separated from the rest of the sentence.

✪ In Indirect Speech ( " " ) is Omitted.

✪ For Assertive sentences , the Indirect Speech clause is introduced by the conjunction 'that' mostly.

✪ E.g. :- Teacher said , " Siddarth is writing letter. " ( Direct Speech )

✪ Indirect Speech :- Teacher said that Siddarth was writing letter.

✪ Pronouns in Indirect Speech are always in third person

✪ E.g. :- Sheela said , " I am tired." ( Direct Speech )

✪ Indirect Speech :- Sheela said that she was tired.

✪ Verb in Indirect Speech are usually in past tense.
