Johnsy is a week and thin girl. She has set up a studio with the help of her friend Sue. She catches pneumonia and also becomes mentally weak. As she continues watch the falling leaves of an ivy on the front wall of her window, she harbours a strange fancy. She begins to believe that the moment the last leaf of the ivy drops she will also die. But moment she realizes that the last leaf- painted by Behrman, unknown to her will not fall, she becomes hopeful.
