Let the number of pants be 'x ' and

the number of skirts be ' y '.

Given ,

" The number of skirts are two less

than twice the number of pants

purchased "

y = 2x - 2 -----( 1 )

" The number of skirts is four less

than four times the number of pants

purchased "

y = 4x - 4-----( 2 )

From ( 1 ) and ( 2 ) ,

2x - 2 = 4x - 4

-2 + 4 = 4x - 2x

2 = 2x

2/2 = x

1 = x

x = 1

put x = 1 in equation ( 1 ) , we get

y = 2 × 1 - 2

y = 0

Therefore ,

The number of pants purchased =x = 1

The number of skirts purchased = y = 0
