All the compounds- vinyl chloride, butadiene and styrene undergo addition polymerization.

  • Vinyl chloride undergoes free-radical addition polymerization to give polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It is a thermoplastic polymer which can be moulded into the desired shape on heating. It is widely used in manufacturing of water supply pipes, IV tubes and blood storage bags.
  • Butadiene is the monomer of poly butadiene or polyisoprene. It is called natural rubber and can be used for making car tyres, rubber bands and footware.
  • Styrene also undergoes free radical polymerization to form polystyrene. Polystyrene reacts with butadiene to firm an artificial rubber called Buns-S. Polystyrene is also used in manufacturing disposal cups and in thermal insulation.
