Nematoblast of obelia :

  • This is a organ of offense and also defense. An obelia is a marine- colonial form which is found attached on the surface of the rocks of the sea weeds or wooden piles or even rocks.
  • It forms white or light brownish fur like plant in the sea. It has thread like structure of root called hydrorhiza.
  • Its terminal head is called hydranth. It is a feeding polyps, it captures minute creatures and feeds on it.
  • The nematoblast is a cell which produces the nematocytes. They are also called as the cnidae. It helps in the food collection, protection from its prey and helps in anchorage.
