Nepal has never been under direct foreign rule.

However, for a little more than 100 years between 1846 AD and 1950, Nepal was a de facto vassal of British India. The Rana rulers were loyal servants of the British Empire who provided them protection.

In the Indian Mutiny of 1857, Junga Bahadur himself led a force of 12,000 to help East India Company suppress the mutiny.

In WW1 and WW2, Nepal supplied more than 200,000 men to the British war effort.

Thus, Nepal was indirectly ruled by the British Empire.

Before the British arrived in the scene, Nepal used to pay tribute to the Chinese emperor because the Son of Heaven required all the lands that was under his rule to pay tribute to him. One of the most famous gifts is Arniko the sculptor.

Thus, Nepal was indirectly under China’s control for several centuries.
