Explanation:

Nepal is a multilingual, multiethnic, multicultural and multi-religious nation. The people with different faiths, cultures and ethnicities have been living harmoniously since ancient times. Unity in diversity is the defining characteristics of Nepali society. Mutual coexistence, tolerance and cooperation have guided the people in achieving social cohesion, peace and happiness. Ethnic diversity is an asset, not a liability for the Nepali society that has been able to maintain its integrity and sovereignty for centuries. It is owing to its internal resiliency that has buttressed the social and ethnic harmony in the face of political conflict, natural disasters and foreign invasions. There were also moments of crises when cultural, ethnic and religious antagonism was created to smash the demographic and topographic bond, but the nation’s enlightened tradition, rooted in ancient philosophy and conduct, helped keep the deleterious discourses and effects at bay. Now the nation is confidently marching towards stability and prosperity with the promulgation of the inclusive and democratic Constitution in 2015. The ethnic and cultural concord has been at the heart of the nation-building project envisaged by the national charter.

The other day Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, while addressing the Maghi festival function in Kathmandu, noted that unity in diversity was the identity of Nepali culture. “Diversity is not a problem but a culture,” said the PM, adding that every religion, ethnicity and castewas unique and serve as an essential component of social unity and bonhomie. He rightly said that festivals are the boosters of enthusiasm and encouragement, and Maghi, a key festival of the Tharu community, has played an instrumental role in consolidating relations among the Nepali people. Nepal’s Constitution has ensured the upliftmentof all indigenous nationalities, religions and ethnic groups. It has ample provisions aimed at providing opportunities for the marginalised people and ethnicities. Legal arrangements have been made to ensure their access to the organs of the state so that they do not feel ignored by the state.

Makar Sankranti and Maghi Festival are the major festivals, inspiring all the Nepalis to keep the mutual unity, goodwill, friendship and tolerance intact. Festivals are not only about emotional joy and ecstasy, they also spread the message of peace and friendship. They help establish a distinct identity of the country in the world. Tharus are an indigenous people with rich customs, language and culture. They have been playing a vital role in preserving national unity, development and harmony. Known as the ‘son of the Terai,’ the Tharu community is a stabilising force in the plains when it is rocked by toxic ethno-centric politics. Despite their contribution to the sustenance of national sovereignty and territorial integrity, their socio-economic status is not up to the mark. The time has come for them to have a fair crack of the whip. The nation can’t achieve prosperity and the desired peace if its citizens’ socio-economic conditions are not improved. Now it stands on the threshold of economic transformation with the three-tier election, and the Tharus deserve to get the due dividend of democracy.
