Its was under elite control for a long time
Its landlocked nature works against the growth of economy
Though there is a deepening of democracy during the last two decades, that has not led to the allocation of adequate resources to the poor. There is elite control in rural economy.
The competitive democracy is yet to stabilize. The size of the middle class is not that important.
