HELLO THERE!
The concept involved in this question is that, Esters are produced when carboxylic acid is treated with alcohol in presence of concentrated sulphuric acid. Esters are sweet smelling (actually the smell is called as fruity smell).
So, the neutral organic compounds are alcohols and the functional group in alcohols is OH (hydroxy) group.
Chemical equation:
=> Methanol = CH₃OH + CH₃COOH ------> CH₃COOCH₃ + H₂O
=> Ethanol = C₂H₅OH + CH₃COOH ------> CH₃COOC₂H₅ + H₂O
When we took Methanol (first case), the ester formed was Methyl Acetate, or Methyl Ethanoate.
When we took Ethanol (second case), the ester formed was Ethyl Acetate, or Ethyl Ethanoate.
THANKS!
