Answer:

The story of ‘Hearts and Hands’ shows us that appearances can be deceptive. The main theme of the story is this as Miss Fairchild a rich, young, well dressed lady meets an old friend, Mr. Easton in a train compartment in the west. He was handcuffed to another man. She couldn’t take her eyes off the handcuffs and the glad look in her eyes of meeting an old pal slowly changed into a ‘bewildered horror’. While they were talking, the other man handcuffed, marshall, sensed some embarrassment and to save some embarrassment and humiliation jumped in the conversation and said Mr. Easton is the marshall and he is taking him to Leavenworth prison for a time of 7 years due to counterfeiting. In this situation Miss Fairchild believes the marshall because she sees Mr. Easton as handsome young man bold, frank countenance who looks like one of the western heroes, but not as a fraudster, criminal and a counterfeiter. She also believed it due to rough appearance of marshall as a glum-faced person. This is a very convincing instance that show that “appearances can be deceptive”, because Miss Fairchild judged the men by their appearances. please vote and rat if found helpful
