BADLAPUR: What was supposed to be an 11-hour journey turned into a 17-hour ordeal for 1,050 people aboard Kolhapur-bound Mahalaxmi Express that left Mumbai around 8.30pm on Friday after the train got stuck in flooded tracks near Chamtoli village between Badlapur and Vangani stations.After heavy rains, Ulhas river was overflowing around 200 metre from the spot where the train was stuck. Passengers were stranded in a place, which was around 70 km from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.In one of the biggest joint rescue operations launched since July 26, 2005 floods in the state, around 1,200 personnel of the IAF, Army, Navy, NDRF, state police, Railway Police, local agencies, NGOs and volunteers were involved in the mission to take all 1,050 passengers to safety. "At night, we could not see the water level and went to sleep. But when we woke up in the morning, we were shocked to see water all around," said Abhishek Borgikar, a bank staffer.
