KOLKATA: Burglars robbed three houses of the same locality in north Kolkata on Friday night and decamped with valuables worth lakhs. One of the houses burgled belongs to an officer of Kolkata Police. In past one week, this is the second incident where city police officers fell pray of the burglars.
On Saturday morning, Samrat Ghosh, an officer of Kolkata Police's wireless wing, found the lock of the main door of his rented flat at HK Seth Road of Sinthee police station area broken. The entire room was ransacked and cash from the almirah looted. Around 150 gram gold ornaments and cash were looted from his residence, he told the police.Samrat and his neighbour Mintu Bhunia stay on the ground floor. Mintu, a fish trader who was also not at home on Friday night, found his house burgled when he came back. He found 90 grams gold ornaments and Rs 15,000 cash missing from his almirah.
Their neighbour Shantanu Ghosh, who resides on the opposite side of the lane, was also robbed. Burglars took Rs 5,000 cash from his house. Police suspect that all the three robberies were done by the same gang. However, their modus operandi surprised the cops. Generally, burglars do not try to loot more than one house from the same locality fearing arrest.
In another incident, Jhantu Saha, a contractual employee of BSNL, lodged a complaint with Taratala police on Saturday against four robbers for allegedly looting Rs 1 lakh from him at knife point. Saha, a resident of Sonarpur, told police that while he was waiting outside the Majerhaat station, four youths tried to snatch his cash bag what was the collection money. When he resisted, one of them attacked him with a knife and fled after taking the bag. However, police found discrepancies in his statement and the medical report hinted that the injury was self-inflicted.
