Speed = sq rt[P/d] is known s newton's formula for speed of sound. It can be proved that the isothermal elasticity of a gas of density 'd' is P. So it was thought that during rarefactions and compressions, temperature of the regions remain constant. This can happen if heat can travel between the regions. But Laplace suggested that the changes are so fast when sound travels that the temperature in different regions cannot remain same. So he considered adiabatic elasticity, which is "gamma*P", in stead of isothermal elasticity. 'gamma' is the ratio of specific heat of the gas at constant pressure and at constant volume. When this correction was mde there was better agreement with the experimental value of speed of sound in a gas.
