he used two prisms. passed a beam through first and then the second which was placed in opp. orientation to the first. the beam after splitting into 7 colors after passing through 1 got condensed to 1 beam after passing throgh second

when he scattered the light on the prism ,the light got deflected and produced 7 colours ,(vibgyor), also known a spectrum.
