Newton’s First law of motion states that an object will remain at rest or in uniform motion

unless acted upon by an external force. There are many applications of the first law of

motion.

An object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. Similarly, an

object will continue to stay in motion with the same speed and direction unless acted upon

by an external force.

(i) What will happen if a force is applied to a body moving with a constant speed along a

straight line?

(a) The speed increases

(b) The direction changes

(c)The momentum decreases

(d) Continues to move with uniform velocity

(ii) kg m/s is the unit of which among the following:

(a) Change in momentum

(b) Force

(c) inertia

(d) none of these

(iii) A coin of rupee one is placed on a cardboard. This cardboard along with coin is placed

on an empty glass. The coin will fall into the glass if

(a) we strike the coin with the finger

(b) we strike the cardboard very slowly with a finger

(c) we strike hard the card with the finger

(d) we strike the cardboard with a finger and the coin is glued with the cardboard.

(iv) Inertia of an object tends to cause the object

(a) To resist any change in its state of motion

(b) To decrease its speed to

(c) Increase its speed

(d) To decelerate it due to friction

(v) While doing an experiment to find the relationship between weight of a rectangular

wooden block lying on a horizontal table and the minimum force required to just move it

using a spring balance it is observed that

(a) more inertia less force

(b) less inertia more force

(c) more inertia more force

(d) no relationship between inertia and force
