Newton's rings are formed with reflected light of wavelength 589 nm using a plano-convex lens and a planeglass plate with a liquid between them. The diameter of the 15 th ring is 5.1 mm and radius of curvature of the curved surface of the lens is 1 m. Calculate the refractive index of the liquid if the ring is dark.

Given:

Wavelength, λ = 589 nm

n = 15

Diameter, Dn = 5.1 mm

Radius of curvature, R = 1 m

To Find: Refractive index, μ

Formula Used:

For nth dark ring:

\mu= \frac{4n\lambda R}{D_n^2}

Calculations:

Substitute the values:

\mu= \frac{4\times 15\times 589\times 10^{-9} \times 1}{(5.1\times 10^{-3})^2}\\\mu =1.36

Thus, the refractive index of the liquid is 1.36.
