let two object A and B of masses M and m lie at a distance small d from each other . let the force of attraction between two objects is F , according to the universal law of gravitation the force between the objecs is directly proportional to the product of their mass

F directly proportion to M*m - eq.1

And force between two object is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them .

F directly proportional by 1/r^2 -eqn.2

on combining eqn1 and eqn.2

F directly proportion by Mn/r^2

F=G Mm/r^2

where G is constant of proportionality and is called universal gravitation constant .
