Question:

Balance this equation

NH3 + O2 -------- NO + H2O

Answer:

Balanced Equation: 4NH3 + 5O2 = 4NO + 6H2O

Word Equation: Ammonia + Dioxygen = Nitric Oxide + Water.

It is Double Displacement Reaction.

Double Displacement Reaction: the reaction in which exchange their ions and insoluble in water is called Double Displacement Reaction.

NH3 + O2→NO + H2O.

First we will balance a non metal if there is no any metal.

NH3+O2→NO +H2O.

Now, we will balance oxygen if there is no any non metal in the reaction other than Hydrogen.

NH3+O2→NO+H2O.

Now, balance hydrogen.

2NH3+O2→ NO +3H2O.

2NH3+O2→2NO+3H2O {Since, Nitrogen is unbalance now.}.

2NH3+5/2O2→2NO+3H2O.{since, Oxygen is unbalance now}

Multiplying both LHS and RHS with 2 we get,

4NH3+5O2→4NO + 6H2O.

Hence, equation is balanced
