Total amount of cheese
 =  \frac{3}{8} \:  pounds

Number of sandwiches = 3
Amount of cheese he put on 1 sandwich
 =  \frac{3}{8}  \div 3 \\  =  \frac{3}{8}  \times  \frac{1}{3}
3 and 3 will get cancelled
So the amount of cheese he put on 1 sandwich
 =  \frac{1}{8} \:  pounds

Hope this helps you!!!!

Given:

(i) Nicholas buys 3/8 pound of cheese.

(ii) He puts the same amount of cheese in three sandwiches.

To find:

(i) The amount of cheese he puts in each sandwich.

Solution:

It is given that Nicholas puts \frac{3}{8} \\ pounds of cheese in 3 sandwiches.

The amount of cheese he puts in each sandwich would obviously be lesser.

In 3 sandwiches,  \frac{3}{8} \\ pounds of cheese are put.

So, by unitary method, in 1 sandwhich, \frac{3}{(8*3)} = \frac{1}{8} pounds of cheese are put.

Therefore, Nicholas puts \frac{1}{8} pounds of cheese in each sandwich.
