Given:

Nick draws water from a well having depth of 5m. The maximum work he is capable of doing is 100 J and he is using a rope to lift the water which can bear a maximum load of 18N.

To find:

Calculate the maximum weight of water he can pull up.

Solution:

Work done by Nick = Work done by water + Work done by rope

W = Mgh + mgh

where M is the weight of water

m is the weight lifted by rope

h is the height of the well

Substitute the values in the above equation.

100 = M × 9.8 × 5 + 18 × 9.8 × 5

100 = 49  M + 882

49 M = 100 - 882

M = - 782/49

M =  - 15.95 N (in opposite direction to that of the earth's gravitational force)

M ≈ 16 N

Therefore, the maximum weight of water Nick can pull up is 16 N.
