What is Refraction ?

Refraction is all about the bending of light .

Reflection involves a change in direction of waves/light when they bounce off a obstacle or barrier.

Refraction of light is apt by a change in speed and wavelength of the two or more waves.

Law's of Refraction :

1) The incident ray (i), refracted ray(r) and the normal to the interface of given two transparent media, all lie in same plane .

2) The ratio of sin of angle of incidence to the sin of angle of refraction is always constant for given media .

  • The 2nd law of Refraction is also known as Snell’s Law of Refraction.

  • It is given as \sf\dfrac{ \sin i }{sin r} = constant

Example :

  • In the case of light traveling from air into the water, light would be refracted towards the normal line !!

  • This is so because the light itself is slowed down into the water .
