Nij and ryoti systems were the two methods of indigo cultivation.
They were different from each other in following ways:
- In Nij system, the cultivators used to produce indigo in lands that he himself owned or rented.
- In Nij system, the cultivators has to hire labourers for working in their fields and carry out work for indigo cultivation.
- In ryoti system, the cultivators has to sign contract and the contract promises them a advance pay, but in return had to commit atleast 25% of land to indigo cultivation.
- In ryoti system, the cultivators had to sow seeds, till lands and look after the crops whereas the planter used to supply seed and drill.
- The peasants were exploited largely through this ryoti system as they were more attracted to this system because it used to promise advance pay to peasants.
- The peasants were pressurized to grow indigo on fertile lands else they preferred to grow food crops over fertile lands.
