Answer:

Distance=18 m

Displacement=6m

Explanation:

Distance=(6+12)m

=18m

Displacement=6-12

=-6 m(the - symbol tells about the direction i. e., South)

Given:

Nilesh moves toward north by 6m and take U-turn then travel toward south by 12m

To Find:

Distance travelled and displacement by Nilesh

Solution:

We know that,

  • Distance is the length of actual path covered by body
  • Displacement is the distance between starting and final position

\rule{190}{1}

Let the distance travelled by Nilesh be 'D'

So,

D= 6+12

D= 18 m

\rule{190}{1}

Let the displacement of Nilesh be 'd'

From the diagram, it is clear that displacement of Nilesh is equal to the distance between A and C which in turn is equal to d

∴ d= BC-AC

d= 12-6

d= 6 m towards South

Hence, distance travelled by Nilesh is 18m and displacement of Nilesh is 6 m towards south.
