Nisha’s aunt lives in western India, i.e., Jodhpur. One summer evening, Nisha
had a talk with her brother Sam about the weather. Though it was summer, Nisha’s
family enjoyed a better climate at North – East India, i.e., Shillong, at that time.
Sam told that it is extremely hot at Jodhpur and the temperature rises up to 450 C.
a) What is weather and climate?
b) Why there is a variation of weather in two different parts of India, though climate
was summer?
c) What are the primary factors that determine the changes in weather?
Answers
Answer:
a) Weather reflects short-term conditions of the atmosphere while climate is the average daily weather for an extended period of time at a certain location. Weather can change from minute-to-minute, hour-to-hour, day-to-day, and season-to-season. Climate is the average of weather over time and space.
b) The climate of India depends greatly on monsoon winds. The monsoons usually happen due to the differential heating of land and water. You probably know that land heats faster than water. This change in heating leads to a difference in pressures, which in turn leads to currents.
c) Although many factors combine to influence weather, the four main ones are solar radiation, the amount of which changes with Earth's tilt, orbital distance from the sun and latitude, temperature, air pressure and the abundance of water.
