There are many methods for the separation of nitrogen from atmosphere. But the cost involved in the process of converting this atmospheric nitrogen to nitric acid is very high.

Hence nitric acid is manufactured by Ostwald process and not manufactured from atmospheric nitrogen.

Nitric acid is made from the reaction of the nitrogen oxide and water and not from the atmospheric nitrogen. sometimes for producing more nitrogen oxide atmospheric  oxygen is used
