Nitric oxide gas at 2 atmand oxygen gas at 1 atm are injected simultaneously through pinhole of identical area of cross section at opposite end of circular glass tube . the length of tube is 1mand gases are kept at same temperature . determine the distance from O2 end at which first flash of shown fume would be observed

Let the distance travelled by nitric oxide is a whereas distance travelled by oxygen is (1 – a).

The rate for nitric oxide r1 = a /t

M1 = 30 g /mol

The rate for oxygen r2 = (1-a) /t

M2 = 16 g /mol

Rate can be shown as,

r = P (T /M)^1/2

So, r_1 /r_2 = (P_1 /P_2)* (M_2 /M_1)^1/2

a /(1-a) = (2/ 1) * (16 /30)^1/2

a /(1-a) = ( 2.13 )^1/2 = 1.46

a = 0.6 m

(1 -a) = 0.4 m

Thus, the distance travelled by oxygen is 0.4 m

Correct option is

B

0.33m

t1d1Xd2t2=M1M2XP2P1

Time of diffusion for both is same in the tube so,t1 = t2

M1 =30, M2 = 16, d1 = a, d2=(1-a), P1=2 , P2=1

∴(1−a)a=3016X12

∴(1−a)a=
