Phosphorous has a larger atomic size and hence needs to form 3 sigma bonds with 3 other P atoms. N on the other hand is smaller; and triple bonds(1 sigma; 2 pi) with another N to form N2. Since P is a larger atom; the distance between electrons and atomic nucleii is greater; rendering the bonds weak in the outer electrons.
