nitrogen is an essential for nutrient for all life forms . However atmospheric nitrogen cannot be used by the life forms directly . Nitrogen-fixation can be achieved by biological and physical processes . The biological processes of N2-fixation is carried out by certain bacteria , by physical processes like lightening can also fix atmospheric nitrogen that can be used by other life forms .

Think and analyse the above statement and discuss in your own words the role of nitrogen - fixation bacteria and in nitrogen - fixation .

Explanation:

The chief reservoir of nitrogen is the atmosphere; in fact nitrogen makes up 78% of the gases in atmosphere.Since most living things, however, cannot use elemental atmospheric nitrogen to make amino acids and other nitrogen containing compounds, they are dependent on nitrogen present in soil minerals. So, despite the abundance of nitrogen in atmosphere, shortage of nitrogen in the soil is often the major limiting factor in plant growth.

The process by which limited amount of nitrogen is circulated and recirculated throughout the world of living organisms is known as nitrogen cycle.

Following are three major process in nitrogen fixation:

Rhizobium converts the atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia and amminium ionsprocess called ammonification.

Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter convert ammonia and ammonium ions into nitrates and nitrites process called nitrification.

Nitrates are then absorbed into the plant root from soil and then used by plant to make proteins and other substances this process is called assimilation.
