Pulses are legumes. And the mech. of biological nitrogen fixation take place in them. Various bacteria infect the roots and form nodules. These modules when young take nutrient from the plant. When the mature they form pink coloured structure called leg-haemoglobin and it helps in scavenging oxygen and taking atmospheric nitrogen and converting it into ammonia which is useful for the plants. Hence no additional nitrogen fertilizer are required during cultivation.
