Oxygen is a gas that promotes burning. That's the main reason of increase of level of rapid fires. If Oxygen would have formed the bulk of atmosphere, then any flammable object producing heat will catch fire, even living beings. This would have led to the existence of manking. Hence, nitrogen forms the bulk of out atmosphere, to prevent easy catching fire of objects and so we are still surviving.
