Nitrogen has five electrons in it's outermost cell. It can obtain inert gas configuration by either gaining three electrons(2s22p6) in this case oxidation state would be -3. It can also attain a stable electronic configuration by loosing 5 outermost electrons(2s2), In this case oxidation state would be +5. Nitrogen can show all the oxidations from -3 to +5 depending upon conditions.
