WHAT ARE ALKALI METALS?

Elements which are present in the first Group of Long form Periodic tables (Except Hydrogen) are called Alkali Metals.

They are 6 in numbers and last energy shell of all alkali metal contains only one velence electron.

ELECTRONIC CONFIGURATION:-

lithium =  [He]{2s}^{1}

sodium = [Ne] {2s}^{1}

potassium = [Ar] {4s}^{1}

Rubidium = [Kr] {5s}^{1}

Caesium = [Xe] {6s}^{1}

Francium = [Rn] {7s}^{1}

PROPERTIES:-

  • Alkali metals are soft to touch and we can cut them easily with knife even.

  • All alkali metals are highly Reactive.Reactivity of these metals increase while moving down the group.

  • They lost there one velence Electron easily thus form Balanced as well as positive ions.

  • These metals must be kept under Kerosene oil or under any other preservation due to thier highly reactive nature.Even it is very hard to find them freely around us.They always found in combine state.

  • They readily react with Environment Oxygen to form their respective Oxides in this way=>2X + O2 => X2O. (where X stands for any alkali metal)
