Carbon (C) has four hands, i.e., it can make 4 bonds maximum.

In the structure of C2H2 you can see that each of the 2 Cs have 4 bonds, each C having 1 with Hydrogen(H) and remaining 3 with the other C.

There can be a maximum of three bonds between 2 Cs. The first bond that a C makes with a C or any other element, the bond is said to be sigma-bond. Whereas, if that same C makes another bond with the C or the other element with which it has already made the sigma-bond, then the second bond is said to be pi-bond and any further bonds made with the same element are pi-bonds.
