Step-by-step explanation:

mean of 2,12,4,9,5,16 = x

mean =  \frac{sum \: of \: observations}{number \: of \: observations}

 \frac{2 + 12 + 4 + 9 + 5 + 16}{6}  = x

 \frac{48}{6}  = x

x = 8

median of 4,3,x,x-1,12,16 = y................(eq no. 1)

substuting x = 8 in eq no. 1

= 4,3,8,8-1,12,16

=4,3,8,7,12,16

Arranging In Ascending Order

= 3,4,7,8,12,16

n = 6 (even number)

we know the formula when n is even number.

 { \frac{n}{2} }^{th}  \: term \: and \:  { \frac{n + 2}{2} }^{th}  \: term

n = 6

 { \frac{6}{2} }^{th}  \: term \: and \:  { \frac{6 + 2}{2} }^{th}  \: tem

 { \frac{6}{2} }^{th}  \: term \: and \:  { \frac{8}{2} }^{th}  \: term

 =  {3}^{rd}  \: and \:  {4}^{th}  \: terms

3rd number = 7

4th number = 8

the average of 3rd and 4th terms

   \frac{7 + 8}{2}  = y

 =  \frac{15}{2}  = y

  7.5 = y

∴ x = 8

y = 7.5
