George tried to play his banjo and his attempts were a great disaster, he was discouraged by all. Harris complained that he would rather have a headache than listen to banjo. Montmorency would start howling. George could never learn to play banjo. He tried practicing while they were up the river but it was never a success. Harris' words were enough to unnerve any man.

George did not get enough opportunity back home too.His landlady objected as there was a woman upstairs who was in a delicate state and the doctor was afraid that George's banjo practice might injure her. George tried taking it out with him at night and practicing around the square. But the inhabitants complained to the police about it, and a watch was set for him one night and he was captured. The evidence against him was very clear and he was bound to keep peace for six months.

He seemed to have lose heart in the business after that. He made one or two feeble efforts but there was always the same coldness and the same discouragement every time.
