It's a Double Displacement Reaction

Nitrogen dioxide reacts with water to give nitric acid and nitrous acid

Hi There!

____________________________________________________

2NO₂ + H₂O ====> HNO₂ + HNO₃

Since, Nitrogen dioxide is an acidic oxide,

Therefore, It dissolves in water to give a mixture of nitrous acid and nitric acid.

NO₂ is thus a mixed anhydrous as it produces two different acids on hydration.

But, Sometimes, as HNO₂ is highly unstable,it will undergoes disproportionate reaction to give HNO₃ and NO as the product.
