Sir Simon had been chained up in a room and starved to death by his brothers-in-law. The chains of the Ghost were reminiscent of the actual chains used to tie up Sir Simon. Metaphorically speaking these chains also represented the chains that tied him to the mortal world. The Ghost was not free, he had found no peace and his pains are represented by the chains that tied him. When little Virginia went into the hidden room behind the "Tapestry Chamber" and wept for Sir Simon's his "chains" gave away. Finally, he was at peace and free. Thus, the chains represent his confinement and when he was at peace, his skeleton was removed from the chains. Sir Simon received a grand funeral and he was laid to rest.
