Node of Ranvier, periodic gap in the insulating sheath (myelin) on the axon of certain neurons that serves to facilitate the rapid conduction of nerve impulses. They are microscopic gaps found within myelinated axons. Their function is to speed up propagation of action potentials along the axon via saltatory conduction. The Nodes of Ranvier are the gaps between the myelin insulation of Schwann cells which insulate the axon of neuron. The nodes (that is, the gaps between the glial cells) are essentially cylindrical and small: about 1 to 2 micrometers. The spacing between nodes (that is, the width of the individually-wrapped glial cell) is about 1.5 millimeters.
