Character sketch of Nomitha.

Nomitha is the main character in the lesson 'Matchbox'.She hails from a poor family. But she is married to a rich person named Ajith. To her mother, she is living like a queen as large family.

Nomitha frequently gets letters from her mother . Her mother is a poor widow. She always demands money from Nomitha. She always writes to her about her troubles and hardships. But whenever there is a letter with Nomitha's name on the envelope,Ajit opens the letter and reads it first, before passing it to her.It is possible that oftentimes he doesn't give it to her at all.For this reason, she is quite angry with him.

Whenever Ajit sees a letter from Nomitha's mother he guesses that it is for money. When he mentions that fact to Nomitha, her head hangs low with shame. So,out of anger and grief, she forbids her mother from writing to her on postcards. Her letters wouldn't let Nomitha keep her self-respect and dignity. So,Nomitha decides to write to her mother that she can't give any more help for her and should not hope for anything from her.But in reality she can't write such hard words. In her mind, she secretly thinks about how she might be able to send her mother a few rippers. Her kind heartedness is displayed by this fact.

Throughout the lesson,we witness Nomitha's anger towards Ajit. But whenever Nomitha asks about Ajit's mistake he tries evade the topic. He finds silly reasons for continuing his mistake His attitude towards her complaints make Nomitha further angry and mad.At one moment she even tried to burn her own sari, threatening to commit suicide.

The other family members also pinch her with sharp words. But Nomitha simply reacts with a laugh towards all those hard words. She has her own powers. But she sacrifices her happiness for the sake of a good family life. She always stands under the shadow of Ajit. So,we can compare her with a matchbox.

hope this will help u. :)
