Non-metals like sulphur react with oxygen to produce acidic oxides which turn blue litmus red (option b).

  • Sulphur is a non-metal. When non-metals react with oxygen they produce acidic oxides.
  • The non-metal oxides share electrons by being bonded covalently. When these metals mix in water, they form oxyacid ions.
  • Oxyacid ions are highly electronegative and dissociate to release hydrogen H+ ions.
  • The presence of H+ ions makes the solution of non-metal oxides + water acidic in nature.
  • To determine acidity of a solution we must use a blue litmus paper. If the solution is acidic the result shows that the blue litmus paper turns red.
  • Acidic oxides made from non-metal + oxygen turn blue litmus red
