VAN'T OFF FACTOR -

  • A factor that defines the effect of solute on the properties of a solution.
  • The degree of dissociation or association of the solutes in the solution.
  • It is also given as the ratio of substances formed or dissociates in the total concentration of the solution by mass.
  • The van't hoff factor is calculated as -

i = \frac{Normal Molar mass}{Observed Molar mass}

  • In the case of an association, the factor is less than 1 whereas in the case of dissociation of the particles the factor is more than 1.

GIVEN -

Normal molar mass = 246 g/mol

Observed molar mass = 346 g/mol

According to the equation,  i = \frac{246}{346}

i = 0.71
