Normally when we learn something we feel a sense of achievement but in the poem "Once upon a time" why does the father feel sorry to have learnt many things?

Of course if we learn anything we feel we achieve something.
But in "once up on a time" lesson he think learned things are not good things. He think feelings with out heart are not good... but in society every one are selfish and see their own happiness and learned show feelings with out heart.. so he feel sorry for learnt that type of things like smile without heart....
