Hi there

It is due to a phenomena called Winter disturbances which has its origin in Mediterranean sea.

Basically western disturbances are low pressure temperate cyclones associated with westerlies which carry moisture from the Mediterranean littorals and blow over Iraq , Iran , Afghanistan , Pakistan and finally reach the north western part of India .

Main reason behind this phenomenon is the shifting of pressure belt towards equator during winter season , which in turn causes east flowing winds to migrate towards equator and they blow over 30 degree north latitude . This easterly wind carry moisture from Mediterranean sea and bring in rain along it's path .
