Northern Norway experiences 24 hours of daylight for several weeks during summer. What is this phenomenon called and why is it like that?

First, the 24 hours of daylight occurs during the northern summer, not winter. The bottom line it’s caused by two factors, first the world is round and secondly the earth is tilted with respect to the earth solar plane (ecliptic). Now the sunlight is centered on the equator, but in the winter the tilt of the earth is away from the sun, essentially putting the far north polar region over the horizon from the sun. The opposite in the summer, the earth is tilted towards the sun and Norway has essentially 24 hours of daylight. In the below diagram is shown the norther summer-24 hours of sunlight. To visualize winter turn the diagram counterclockwise and you’ll have the north pole 23–30 to the left of the earth axis and the pole getz no light. For a detailed explanation check out the Milankovitch cycle of the Tilt.
