The northern plains includes the valleys of the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra. It lies south of the Himalayas and north of the peninsular mountains like Aravalli. The plains are low lying (average of 200 metres above sea level) and is covered in alluvial soil brought down by the rivers that rise in the Himalayas. There are not many hills in the region. The alluvial soil makes the region prime agricultural land and this makes the area one of the most thickly populated regions of the world. If you add up the population of Bangladesh, the Indian states of West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab (Indian and Pakistani Punjabs) and Sindh, the Northern Plains have more than 750 million people (a tenth of the human population)
